A Celebration of Life is one of the most significant events a family will ever bring together — and one of the most difficult to plan. In the midst of grief, the logistics of feeding a room full of people who loved someone can feel impossibly heavy.

Coastal Roots Events & Catering lifts that weight completely. We handle every element of the reception so the family can be present for the people in the room — not managing a kitchen, coordinating service, or worrying about whether the food runs out.

This is one of the most important things we do. We treat it that way.

What a Celebration of Life Reception Should Provide

The best memorial receptions share a common quality: they feel generous. There is food worth eating, space to gather, and a warmth to the setting that allows people to move between grief and memory and laughter without interruption. The catering should support that movement — never intrude on it.

Our Celebration of Life formats are built around that intention:

Grazing and Reception Displays — The format most suited to the flow of a memorial gathering, where guests arrive in waves, conversations happen at their own pace, and no one should have to sit on a schedule. Our Antipasto display — grilled marinated vegetables, olives, roasted peppers, marinated mozzarella, and Genoa salami — alongside a Garden Vegetable Display with basil pesto aioli and a American Artisan Charcuterie board creates a table that is beautiful, abundant, and continuously welcoming throughout the reception.

Buffet Service — For families who want a more structured meal as part of the gathering. Our Grilled Wild Salmon with tarragon butter, Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs, and seasonal vegetable preparations offer a comforting, generous spread that serves a mixed crowd of any age with warmth and dignity.

Plated Reception — For smaller, more intimate Celebrations of Life where the family wants a seated gathering that feels less like a reception and more like the shared meals the person being remembered would have loved.

Dessert is never overlooked. Our Chocolate Torte, Lemon Tart, and Caramel Apple Bread Pudding close the reception with the kind of sweetness that feels appropriate to a life well-lived.

Venues and Off-Site Service

We work at Tarpy's, Rio Grill, and Montrio for families who want a Peninsula restaurant setting for the reception. We also travel off-site to private homes, community venues, church halls, and any location meaningful to the family. Full rental inventory — linens, tableware, serving equipment, and décor — travels with our team.

We understand that timelines for memorial events can be short and unpredictable. Contact us as soon as possible and we will do everything we can to accommodate your date and needs.

What format works best for a Celebration of Life reception?
Grazing tables and reception displays are the most flexible and welcoming format — they allow guests to eat at any point during the gathering without the formality of a seated service. Buffet formats work well for larger gatherings where a meal is expected.

Can you cater at a private home or community venue?
Yes — off-site catering at private residences, church halls, community centres, and any family-chosen venue is available throughout the Monterey Peninsula.
